“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
― Robert F. Kennedy
Nestled at the foot of the Maluti Mountains, deep in the heart of South Africa on the border of Lesotho lies a small town named Ficksburg. A town built on the foundations of border relations with Lesotho and farming. With a climate that allows diversification, the farming enterprises include livestock, grains, fruit and vegetables. It is amongst these farms that you will find a group of people with a passion to make a difference. We call ourselves MD Foundation.
MD Foundation (Pty) Ltd was formed in 2010 when 5 family owned farming operations came together after each individually reached a point where change was inevitable. Confronted with challenges they found themselves at a turning point in their lives having to decide whether to carry on farming or to pursue other ventures. But one question kept popping up: What about the people? 180 people stood to loose their work and their income. Friends at the time, the farmers was inspired by Isaiah 58 instructing them to :
”… divide your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house…” . That we should stop enriching ourselves and focus on making a true difference in the community around us. Land and assets were amalgamated to form a stronger farming operation able to extend a hand to what has become our vision:
MD is a community of believers with the common purpose of making Gods Kingdom visible on earth. By farming and conducting business we aim to create work, train and uplift people and care for the poor and sick in our community.
Today the company employs 250 full time employees who in their turn support approximately 2500 people in total. This is done by doing what we know best: farming. The current farming enterprises include dairy cattle, beef cattle and grain production.
Our vision is to empower our people with co-ownership and job creation through projects that will enable us to do so.
The current structure can be summarised as follows:
